Finding Peace in Chaos

Finding peace in chaos begins with remembering we are never separated from God.

In Christopher Nolan’s magnificent film, The Dark Knight, the Joker tells a despondent Harvey Dent his entire plan is to “introduce a little anarchy, upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos.”

Before the creation of the world, there was tohu (transliterated from the Hebrew תֹּהוּ to-hoo) which means: formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptiness, or chaos. In Greek, it originates from the Greek word khaos (χάος), which means "abyss" or "that which gapes wide open". This term was used to describe the primordial void or the vast, empty space that existed before the creation of the universe. We see a form of it used in the New Testament, in Luke’s gospel where Jesus tells the parable of ‘The Rich Man and Lazarus’: Abraham tells the rich man, “between us and you a great chasma (khas-mah) has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us” (16:26). An unbridgeable gap and a primordial abyss sound like only they could be found in the Twilight Zone but eerily enough they’re not.

We are living in an unreality of sorts, kind of like the Twilight Zone. Agents of chaos are doing all that they can to disrupt peace in the world. Thankfully, in our spiritual life, we know that the Prince of Peace, the Overcomer, El Shaddai God Almighty leads us! We are not separated from God! No matter what occurs in the world, no matter what agents of chaos may throw our way, we can live with real peace (Jn 14:27) knowing that “Christ who lives in me” (Gal. 2:20) is the solution to an increasingly chaotic world.
