God as Your First Resort

Choosing God as your first resort changes how you carry every worry.

The other night, I insomniatically laid in bed awake. Reading couldn't put me to sleep, listening to music, or journaling. I was confounded because I had been sleeping for two hours prior. Now, all of a sudden, I'm awake and can't fall back asleep. So, as minds tend to do, mine began to think and think and think. I was thinking about the things that frustrated me during the day, how my week hadn't gone as planned, and whether or not tomorrow would be a good day.

Amid my tossing and turning, I had an epiphany…if you can call it that. It was the simplest of realizations, yet it was the last thing I thought of. My last resort, if you will.

Had I prayed about what was on my mind which was plaguing the rest I needed? No, I hadn't. Immediately, I knew something was wrong. God had been pushed from first contact to last resort in my life. A few weeks ago, I wrote about straying from the source. Without realizing it, that's what I had been doing.

When something is bothering us, we talk about it with someone we trust. If we keep it to ourselves, then more than likely, we're choosing to wallow in our frustration. Remove that prideful roadblock by turning to God as the first person to talk to. He will first humble you and then give you the clarity and direction you need. Our Heavenly Father is always ready to listen; more than that, He wants us to cast our cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7).

It's not natural to surrender our pride, but it is necessary to mature as a person and a Christian. Don't let yourself fall out of the habit of talking with God. He should be your first resort, not your last.

"Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is" (Mark 13:33).

Always improve the present moment.
