God Opens Doors: A Simple Challenge

"For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries." (1 Corinthians 16:9)

I consider myself a good driver. Not to toot my own horn (pun intended), but I take road safety seriously. I want my myself and my passengers to have a smooth experience while out on the road. But I have been known to miss my turn a time or two or three…. We all have missed something we probably should’ve acted on; maybe a job opening, a chance to help someone, or a moment to share something meaningful. The real misfortune isn't just missing the opportunity itself—it's missing it because we were paying attention to everything except what mattered most. We can be good at navigating life, responsible and careful, and still miss the turns God is directing us to take.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 16:9, "For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries." He saw something most of us would miss: opposition as evidence of opportunity. Where God is working, resistance will follow. Paul recognized this pattern and refused to retreat to safer, more comfortable ministry situations. He pressed into Ephesus precisely because the need was great and the door was wide open.

God Opens Doors in Unexpected Places

The truth is, God opens doors in unexpected places. Sometimes those doors appear among adversaries, in challenging circumstances, or in situations that feel overwhelming. Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 5:15-16 that no one lights a lamp and hides it under a basket. Once we become followers of Christ, we carry light that's meant to be seen. We're entrusted with good news that others desperately need.

This creates a curious tension in the Christian life. On one hand, there's nothing wrong with wanting rewards for our work or seeking comfortable situations. That's human nature. But Paul challenges us to examine our motives. Are we so focused on personal rewards and comfortable circumstances that we're missing the great and effective doors God is opening? Are we avoiding the very places where our light is needed most?

The gospel thrives not in safe, predictable environments (on the contrary), but among those who need it. Paul understood this deeply. He wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:19, "Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a servant to all, to win as many as possible." He chose to forgo potential rewards and comfortable ministry settings for the sake of sharing the gospel where it was needed most.

Choosing the Effective Door

The challenge for us is simple but not easy: improve the present moment. Right now, wherever you are, there are people who need what you carry. God has placed you exactly where you are for a reason. The door is already open. The question is whether we'll notice it and walk through.

Daily Practice: Today, ask God to open your eyes to one opportunity you might be overlooking. It could be a conversation with a neighbor, a chance to serve someone at work, or a moment to offer encouragement. Don't look for the comfortable opportunity. Look for the effective one, even if it comes with adversaries or challenges. Then walk through that door.
