His Mercy Endures Forever

More than any other nation the Israelites had reason to not give thanks, but they had more reason than any other to give thanks to God! Their lineage consisted of slavery, captivity, exile, restoration to their homes, and then the cycle repeated all over again. God promised to care for them as long as they remained faithful to Him. The Psalmist repeats 26 times in Psalm 136, “His mercy endures forever,” a living reminder throughout the ages for God’s people to give thanks always.

Giving thanks to God shouldn’t be conditional. If your thanks are based on the situation then it isn’t genuine. You may believe it is genuine, but your thanks, like your love for God, have to be unconditional just as His love is unconditional towards us. Maybe you’re not particularly looking forward to this Thanksgiving due to the loss of a loved one, or there’s someone who’ll be at the family get-together you’re not particularly fond of. My challenge to you today is to ask God to open your eyes to blessings in your life you’re unaware of or have forgotten. I’m not necessarily talking about tangible things; I’m talking about providential blessings the Lord has bestowed upon you. Take some time to think, clear your head, remove any distractions, and write down three things God has revealed to you to be thankful for. Your first thought might be to shrug it off; I know I used to overlook doing things like this, but I promise you’ll have a better day tomorrow if you follow through. You’ll have these three things as a positive reminder of how much God loves you, cares for you, and what you can be thankful for. And if you're wondering what the picture above has to do with the devotional, it's a reminder to be thankful that the turkey you're eating didn't know how to use a musket, or else you might be on the menu!
