Removing the Log in Your Own Eye

Only the Holy Spirit can remove the log in your own eye, no matter how long it's been there.

When Jesus spoke in parables, He often used every day experiences to convey essential spiritual truths. In Luke 6:39-42, He presents a vivid picture that is both startling and uncomfortable—a log in one's eye. It's a hyperbolic image that captures the listener's attention not just visually but also viscerally. Imagine, if you will, the sheer pain and impossibility of having a log in your eye. It's not merely an obstruction you see; it's an affliction you feel.

This discomforting imagery serves a purpose. It's meant to jolt us into self-examination, to consider how we might be blinded by our own faults while we scrutinize the faults of others. The splinter in our brother's eye is easy to point out, but the log in our own? That requires divine intervention.

The Holy Spirit is the only one who can remove such a log. It's a process that demands immediate action, for the longer we wait, the more we risk spiritual injury—not just to ourselves but to those around us. The log represents our most significant failings—our prejudices, our pride, our unforgiveness. And it's only through the grace and power of the Holy Spirit that we can be freed from these binds.

So let us ask for the courage and humility to seek the Holy Spirit's help in removing the logs from our eyes. Only then can we see clearly to guide others, not as hypocrites, but as fellow sojourners in this world. Let this be our prayer and our pursuit, as vivid and urgent as the imagery Christ has laid before us.
