“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” ~Philippians 4:6-7
Peace of God Through Christ
In 2019, Billy Ray Cyrus dueted a song with the rapper Lil Nas X called “Old Town Road,” a mash-up between country and rap. There’s a line in the song, Cyrus sings: “Ain’t got no stress I’ve been through all that.” Do you think Cyrus has no stress? Is it possible he’s stress-free because of his wealth or fame? Cyrus is no stranger to Christianity: he grew up in a Christian home, his grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher, and he recorded two Gospel albums in the early 2000s. I’m unsure if Cyrus is still a practicing Christian today, but I am certain we can’t “get over” being stressed, or we’ll hit an age where stress disappears. I hate to be the bearer of bad news if you haven’t realized it, but stress will always rear its head throughout your life. We can only deal with it healthily by experiencing the Peace of God through Christ Jesus. This is why we cherish God’s Peace on the second week of Advent – Christ’s birth meant the Prince of Peace, whose reign would have no end, was coming into the world! Do you realize that the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, still reigns? This means we can have a life free of anxiety, meaning a life free of worry. Whenever we begin to worry or stress spreads over us, we can claim Peace that never goes away. I pray this Advent, especially this week, you allow God’s Peace to refresh your life daily through your relationship with Jesus.
Always improve the Present Moment.
