Sacrificial Love: Sacrificial Romance

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." ~1 Corinthians 13:13

When we think of Valentine's Day, our minds often drift to chocolate boxes, red roses, and romantic dinners. But Jesus showed us a deeper meaning of love – one that puts others first and embraces sacrifice. On the cross, He demonstrated the ultimate expression of love: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13).

Practicing Sacrificial Love

Whether you're married, dating, or single, God calls us to practice this kind of sacrificial love in all our relationships. It's not just about grand gestures or special occasions. Sometimes it looks like listening when we'd rather speak, serving when we're tired, or choosing forgiveness when it's hard. These everyday moments of putting others before ourselves reflect Christ's heart.

Think about the last time someone showed you sacrificial love. Maybe it was a friend who stayed up late to help you through a crisis, a parent who gave up something they wanted so you could have an opportunity, or a spouse who quietly shouldered extra responsibilities when you were overwhelmed. How did that make you feel? Chances are, those moments left a lasting impression – not because they were elaborate or expensive, but because they came at a personal cost to someone else.

That's the kind of love Jesus modeled. He didn't just talk about love; He lived it out through constant sacrifice, culminating in the ultimate gift on the cross. When we follow His example, our relationships – romantic and otherwise – become deeper and more meaningful.

Today, choose one way to demonstrate sacrificial love to someone in your life. Instead of focusing on traditional Valentine's gestures, consider what act of service would truly show Christ-like love. It might be as simple as giving up your evening plans to help a friend in need or taking on a task that someone else usually handles.

Remember: Love isn't just about romance – it's about reflecting God's heart in all our relationships. When we align our love with Christ's sacrificial example, we experience relationships as God intended them: deep, meaningful, and transformative.
