Singing with One Voice

Singing with one voice reminds us that heaven's chorus is bigger than what we can see.

One of my favorite things to do on Sunday morning is to pause from singing during service. Yes, you read that correctly. Believe it or not, I don’t always sing. It’s not because I don’t enjoy singing or that I don’t want to make a joyful noise unto the Lord (Psalm 100:1). The reason I’m not always singing is because I’m listening. In those moments when I quiet myself, it’s as if I’m hearing more than just those around me.

Suddenly, I’m made aware of the Harmony of Heaven: the convergence of the Heavenly chorus mingling with ours, along with those singing to God across the world.

I don’t know everyone singing; in fact, there are many I don’t know, yet we are singing together with one voice! Jesus prayed, “all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21). Even though I may not have much in common with many of the people singing, all that matters is that our common denominator is Jesus! Our Savior transcends age, race, disability, and even life and death “since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1)!

Next Sunday morning, while you’re singing, take a moment to listen, and, after that, join back in and realize you’re not just singing with those around you; you’re joining in the Harmony of Heaven.
