Steadfast Love: The Sacred Scars

After the recent storms with winds reaching 100 mph, our neighborhood looks a mess. Massive trees that we thought were indestructible now lie across streets and houses. Even centuries-old oaks with what seemed like unshakeable roots have been toppled. But there's one old oak on my street that's still standing. Its trunk bears fresh scars from flying debris, several large branches have been torn away, and its leaves are battered. Yet there it stands—wounded but not defeated, bent but not broken. This tree's endurance through the storm gives us a picture of the steadfast love of God.

God's love for us didn't begin when we became loveable. It existed before we drew our first breath, before we ever had a chance to earn or deserve it. Scripture makes this crystal clear: "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). His love wasn't earned by our goodness or lost through our failures. It simply remains.

Thomas à Kempis captured this beautifully when he wrote about God's charity: "To me, you have shown the sweetness of your charity, especially in having made me when I did not exist, and having brought me back to serve you when I had gone far astray from you, and having commanded me to love you." God loved us into existence, pursued us when we wandered, and calls us back not because we're worthy, but because love is who He is.

Jesus embodied this perfectly during His time on earth. He loved Judas even knowing betrayal was coming. He washed Peter's feet despite the approaching denial. He prayed for those who crucified Him, asking the Father to forgive them. His love remained constant through rejection, misunderstanding, and abandonment.

The Steadfast Love That Endures

This divine love operates by different rules than human affection. Human love often depends on performance, reciprocation, or favorable circumstances. But God's love chooses to remain when staying is costly, extends grace when judgment seems justified, and pursues us when we're running in the opposite direction.

The Psalms declare this truth repeatedly: "His love endures forever" (Psalm 136). Not His love might endure, or His love usually endures, but His love endures forever. No exceptions!

Loving Others From an Anchored Heart

When we truly grasp the depth of God's unwavering love for us, it transforms how we love others in three major ways: We can extend grace because we've received it abundantly; we can forgive because we've been forgiven completely; we can persist in difficult relationships because God has never given up on us, even when we've given Him every reason to walk away.

This steadfast love becomes the foundation for our own capacity to love. It's not about mustering up more willpower or trying harder to be kind. It's about letting God's inexhaustible love flow through us to others.

As the contemporary chorus reminds us: "Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me." This isn't wishful thinking—it's the bedrock truth that can anchor our hearts as we learn to love like Jesus.

Like that scarred oak tree still standing in my neighborhood, God's love bears the marks of every storm we've weathered together. His love doesn't emerge from our difficulties unmarked, but it emerges unbroken. While other things we thought were permanent get uprooted by life's fierce winds, His steadfast love remains—wounded perhaps by our rebellion, scarred by our unfaithfulness, but never toppled, never defeated.

Daily Goal: Today, when someone tests your patience or disappoints you, pause and remember that God's love for you has never wavered despite your own shortcomings. Let that truth shape how you respond to them.
