Wait for the Lord: Persevere

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” ~Psalm 27:14

In Pastor Brad’s final sermon in the “Faith of our Fathers” series, he preached about what it takes to persevere through the trials of life. King David steadfastly believed the Lord to be the stronghold of [his] life (1), as evidenced by his heartfelt words from Psalm 27.

What It Means to Wait for the Lord

David's psalms are more than just poetic verses; they are a testament to the enduring faith of a man who faced immense challenges. Psalm 27 encapsulates the essence of David's trust in God's power and presence. "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?" These opening words are a declaration of confidence, a belief that no matter the darkness that surrounds, there is a divine light that guides and protects.

The psalm goes on to express a desire for one thing—to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of one's life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple. It's a yearning for closeness with the divine, an acknowledgment that in God's presence, there is safety and peace.

Strength Cultivated Through God's Presence

Pastor Brad's message reminds us that the faith to persevere is not born out of thin air; it is cultivated through a relationship with the divine. It is in the moments of seeking God's presence, in prayer, worship, and meditation, that we find the strength to face our fears and overcome obstacles. David's faith was rooted in the experiential knowledge of God's power in his life, a power that emboldened him to face giants, lead a nation, and pen songs that would resonate with believers for millennia.

As we reflect on the faith of our spiritual forefathers, let us remember that the same source of strength that sustained them is available to us today. May we, like David, find solace in the assurance of God's presence and the infinite power that comes from placing our trust in Him.
