When Friends Let You Down

When friends let you down, God's presence never wavers.

Paul is old. For his day and age, he's lived a long life. In his last days, he sits in a dark prison cell, writing one final letter. This is one is to Timothy. Shortly, he'll be executed for a faith he once had others executed for. Everyone around him has left...except for Luke.

Have you ever felt betrayed by someone you trusted? Have you ever experienced the pain of losing a friend who turned their back on you? If you have, you are not alone. The apostle Paul knew what it was like to be abandoned by those he loved and served. In his final letter, he wrote: "For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:10-11).

Paul was facing death for his faith, and he needed his friends more than ever. But most of them had left him, either for personal reasons or for fear of persecution. Only Luke, the beloved physician and faithful companion, stayed by his side. What can we learn from Paul's situation? How can we cope when people let us down or even forsake us?

Three Ways to Respond When People Leave

First, we can remember that God is always with us. He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). He is the friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). He loves us with an everlasting love and will never stop loving us (Jeremiah 31:3).

Second, we can appreciate the people who stand by us. God often provides us with true friends who share our faith and values, who support us in our trials and joys, and who encourage us in our walk with God. They are a gift from God, and we should cherish them and thank God for them. We should also be that kind of friend to others, following the example of Luke.

Third, we can let go of the people who hurt us or leave us. We don't have to hold on to bitterness or resentment. We can forgive them as God has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32). We can pray for them and bless them (Matthew 5:44). We can also trust that God will deal with them in His justice and mercy (Romans 12:19).

Friends, we live in a fallen world where people are not perfect, and relationships are not easy. But we have a perfect God who loves us perfectly and gives us perfect peace. And we have a hope of a better world where there will be no more betrayal or abandonment, where we will enjoy perfect fellowship with God and His people forever.
