A Change Back to God

In the history of Israel’s kings, King Josiah is remarkable. At the age of 8, he became king of the nation, his father was assassinated, and his grandfather was one of the most wicked kings to ever rule Jerusalem—completely abandoning God. Josiah grows up in Godless surroundings where sinfulness is prevalent.

At the age of 26, he realizes the nation of Israel needs to make a serious change—a change back to God—and it’s up to him to make it happen. He chose to restore the Lord’s temple to its proper glory. Once he finally hears God’s law for the first time he tears his clothes in anguish at the realization of Israel’s massive deviation from the truth and right living! Josiah “did what was right in the LORD’s sight, walking in the way of David his father, not turning right or left” (2). The King decides to be like his ancestor King David, a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14) instead of like his father or his father before him. He changes not only the direction of his legacy but the legacy of the entire country.

Maybe you weren’t raised in a Godly home with Godly parents or maybe you were, and you chose to go the other way. Josiah is an extraordinary example that it’s never too late to make the right change, God is our true father and perfect example, and He is always near, ready to be a lamp unto our path (Psalm 119:105).
