Guard Your Heart: Unoccupied Heart

“the last condition of that person is worse than the first.” ~Luke 11:26b

In the passage of Luke 11:24-26, Jesus warns of the spiritual dangers of an unoccupied heart. It speaks of an unclean spirit that, upon leaving a person, returns to find the 'house' swept clean, then goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself.

Learning to Guard Your Heart

The lesson is clear: guard your heart, and do not leave it swept clean but empty.

This parable serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us that it is not enough to simply rid ourselves of negative influences; we must also fill that void with the Holy Spirit. An empty heart is like an unguarded fortress, vulnerable to any invader that seeks to enter. It is a stark reminder that our spiritual well-being requires constant vigilance and active cultivation of the Fruits of the Spirit.

As we reflect on this message, let us consider what occupies our own hearts. Are we filling our lives from the treasury of good things (see Trisagion Prayers)? Or are we leaving room for negativity to return and multiply, bringing with it a greater darkness than before?

Let this be a moment of introspection. May we strive to not only cleanse our hearts but also to inhabit them with steadfast love, unwavering faith, and enduring hope.
