Overcoming Spiritual FOMO: Stop the FOMO

“that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you” ~1 Corinthians 1:5-6
Overcoming Spiritual FOMO with Contentment in Christ
Overcoming spiritual FOMO starts with remembering Christ has already given us everything we need.
Our modern world is fascinated by the latest trends in music, entertainment, fashion, food, you name it. New products are released daily. Sometimes those products are essentially the same as last year’s model except the manufacturer has slapped a new number on the box. We want what’s new despite what we already have being sufficient. This mindset becomes problematic because we are never content. This mindset is called FOMO which stands for the Fear Of Missing Out.
In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he immediately affirms the Corinthian church is lacking nothing: “to the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in Him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus [Christ]. God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1:2-9).
Three key phrases: “enriched in every way”, “not lacking in any spiritual gift”, and “keep you firm to the end.” Paul is telling the people that the Trinity has equipped the church with all it could ever need even until the last day! In modern terms, there’s no need for the church to have FOMO asking themselves constantly, “What are we missing?” If the question is asked then the answer becomes obvious. The church that feels they are always missing something is missing the most important component of all “the testimony to Christ” (6) or “the truth of Christ” because the truth of Christ is an unlimited storehouse of more than we need!
A Kingdom Mindset, Not a FOMO Mindset
It is a vital question many churches today must pray over; whether their methods are based in a FOMO mindset or are they based in a Kingdom mindset? The Kingdom resides on the rock – the FOMO church gets washed away on the sand! Pray, brothers and sisters we are like the Corinthian church, “who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours” (2b).
Always improve the present moment.
