“For as I walked around looking carefully at your shrines, I even discovered an altar inscribed, 'To an Unknown God.' What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you." Acts 17:23
The Identity of the Unknown God
In 2008, actor and political commentator, Ben Stein released his documentary “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.” It looked at how those who teach the concept of ‘intelligent design’ as opposed to evolution are kept out of academia. Ironically, 2000 years before Stein’s documentary, the Greeks, highly educated for their time but nowhere near our level of advancement, realized there is a Creator of this world…an Intelligent Designer if you will.
While traveling in Greece, Paul revealed the truth behind a great mystery…the identity of the Unknown God. Paul tells the Greeks, this Unknown God, “made from one the whole human race to dwell on the entire surface of the earth, and He fixed the ordered seasons and the boundaries of their regions” (26). But why did the Unknown God do this? The answer is straightforward: “…so that people might seek God” (27a).
It is by the meticulous formation of all things that we can simply know there is a Creator, and all of what we are and all that we see did not come into existence without a Designer. Paul assures us it is not hard to find God, “indeed he is not far from any one of us. For 'In Him we live and move and have our being,' God has overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he demands that all people everywhere repent” (27b-28a, 30).
Friends, it may seem, or even be true, we are receding back into the time of ignorance. The mysterious identity of the Unknown God is no mystery to us; like Paul, we must share His true identity with others.
Always improve the present moment.
