The Only Spiritual Filter

Recently, I discovered that the water I was drinking had serious contaminants in it. I figured my filtered water would suffice… I was wrong. While it is true that most water filters get out most contaminants there’s only one type that can get rid of them all.

When it comes to our spiritual life, the Holy Spirit is the only spiritual filter that can rid us of all impurities. Jesus taught his disciples that the real source of impurity is not what we eat or touch but what we think and do. “But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles. From within people, from their hearts…” (20, 21a). He listed some of the sins that come from our hearts, such as evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness (21b, 22).

These are the things that separate us from God and make us unclean in His sight. They hurt us and others. That's why we need to examine ourselves daily and be on guard against the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil. We need to confess our sins, repent, ask God for His forgiveness, and ask for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
